Frequently Asked Questions

Can Thinking Reading be taught in groups?

Thinking Reading has been specifically developed for students who are reading well behind their peers at secondary school. Research shows that these students all have their own individual gaps in their learning. As a result, they need individualised one-to-one lessons. However, students who are not reading so far behind (ie up to two years behind) can benefit from paired or small group instruction, and we work with schools to help them use these approaches effectively.

How are the lessons structured?

Three thirty minute lessons per week, covering ten to twelve briskly-paced stages.

How long does it take students to complete the programme?

Students stay on the programme until they have caught up completely. The length of time depends on how far behind they are when they start, and how rapidly they progress. Data from schools we have surveyed shows that students typically progress at an average of two months for every half-hour lesson. They are in the programme for an average of six months and typically gain five years or more in their reading.

We already know what we need so why can’t we go straight to Phase 3?

Effective intervention in literacy requires coordination with the whole school strategy, systems and policies. ‘Bolt-on’ interventions typically have minimal impact and waste resources. We ensure that schools are in the best position to target their resources with maximum efficiency and impact.

Is Thinking Reading suitable for students with English as an additional language?

Students need to be fluent in conversational English to benefit from Thinking Reading lessons. Otherwise, they are hampered by their lack of familiarity with English syntax and vocabulary.

My child is at primary school but failing at reading. What can you recommend?
